When you hear 'names' banded about in mat surfing circles, Dirk Brandts is seldom in the mix. However, the usual 'names' who know him describe Dirk as a seriously talented mat surfer who really should be considered as being "up there"

Dirk's other talent is in film making and some may remember some rough clips of a project where he drifts down a river to find a wave. Well, that project is finished and will be played at the San Diego Surf Film Festival. After that, you will see it here.

Looks like a really fun watch.

Aw, thanks for spreading the news, G. I'm very grateful to the San Diego Surf Film Festival for including this little piece. It's short and not exactly a surf movie per se, but it has a sweet feel to it that might complement the more mainstream fare, and where better to show something like that than a film festival?

And BTW, the intrepid character you'll see drifting down the river is Ken Kcknight (aka kendog) whose boundless enthusiasm and goodwill are the very definition of stoked mat man. I'll open the short film on Vimeo in early May.

I've had the pleasure of sharing the surf with Mister Dirk...trust me, dude can ride a mat. His surfing roots go way back, and has plenty of fish kneeboard experience which I think correlates as well.

And...having been a PA (a production assistant in the vernacular of "Hollywood" and the like) on his short subject film project, I can say it's very nice, and very original.

Dirk Bogart -- now there was a Dirk for you! Wish I were "down there." This hasn't been my best season ever, but I did get wet today and am pleased to report that it's still fun!

I email Dirk a lot, and I can be a sloppy typist when communicating with friends.

The salutation "Hi Dirk" often comes out either "Hi Dik" or "Hi Dork." (Sometimes even "Hi Drik," which sounds like a Disney CGI flick.) In either case, hilarity ensues!

Some more "Dirk" trivia since we're on the subject...

The Urban Dictionary defines "Dirk" as:
 dirk --

A person who looks really great. A sort of prototype.
"Wow, *person* looks so good. He sure is a dirk"

 dirk --

a really cool person, someone who is so cool everyone wants to be him. usually dresses in big open shirts to show off his chest. gets all the girls.
"man, baxter is such a dirk, he gets all the girls and he dresses like a porn star"

Either characterization suits our Dirk to a T, but the whole "big open shirt" thing nails it to the wall!

Gosh, I'm loving that Urban Dictionary and all the expansions to this name! Who knew?!

When I was a kid, it was just "Dirk the Jerk," or "Dirky turkey." Oh, and when I ran for vice president of my elementary school, the campaign slogan that put me over the top was "Vote for Dirk -- he'll do the Work."

Well, off to oil my brambly pecs for a while, ta! for now.
